dogs again…

i don’t know if the guy with this truck was expressing his opinion of the state of public education  in utah [pronounced ed-u-ca-tion, not edjacashun] or just doesn’t have any kids, but his bumper sticker made me laugh none-the-less, it says:

my border collie is smarter than your honor student…

life as i know it has changed…. yes, i did it again.  i adopted an abandonded  puppy.  i was thinking about getting a new puppy for several reasons,  one of which is that my old dog is going to be 13 years old in the spring and i need for him to break in a new dog, show him the ropes, if you will.   i had planned on going to the pound on christmas eve,  but last wednesday a guy at my work called to ask me if i had mentioned wanting a puppy?  well, apparently i must have because that’s what someone else at work had told him.   I said, why, do you have a puppy?

he lives in idaho and last monday when it was snowing and cold, a puppy showed up alone and wet in the field next to his house.   he called all his neighbors and no one had a missing puppy.  someone must have just dumped him off ~ that happens a lot in this area, especially out in the county where there is a lot of farm land.  i call it ‘farmer mentality’, but that’s for another post.   anyway maybe someone was using the economy as an excuse and couldn’t afford to feed him so they just dumped him.  i always wonder what these assholes think a dog or cat is going to eat while fending for themselves, but this puppy hit the jackpot because he is now asleep on the floor at my feet!  and his big brother simon is asleep about 5 feet away…  they have matching collars.

i went to look at him on wednesday and brought him home on thursday.

I had to hug the little girl that found him, because she really wanted to keep him.  she looked so sad when she handed him over, but they already have three other grown dogs.

i honestly forgot how busy a puppy can be, i think both james and i will lose weight.  me running after and james running from the puppy.  nikita doesn’t seem to mind one way or the  other i also forgot that puppies have a direct tube that runs directly from their mouth to their butt.  i am now working on ‘regulating’ his functions,  there are rules, he has to go directly outside upon waking and can not have any food after 7:00 p.m. oh, plus i have been getting up twice in the night to let him out of his kennel. [those are today’s rules, they may change tomorrow].

he seems very smart and is not aggressive, but is also not timid.  he and simon are fine together as long as the puppy does not touch simon if he lays down beside him.  he and the cats are also doing fine [which means james hasn’t beaten the crap out of him and for that i am thankful].  with time they will all establish their pecking order, i will fit in there somewhere.

it snowed again today and he loved playing in the snow.  he and simon have been out about 20 times today and have both been dried off about 20 times also.

here is simon showing him the best place to pee….  [never fails, they couldn’t just stand there and look cute]

here he is yesterday showing off his new collar and name tag.  i looked him up on the internet and i’m pretty sure he’s a chesapeake bay retriever.  i’m taking him to the vet on tuesday, we’ll see what his best guess is.  if he grows into his feet he should weigh about 65-75 lbs i would guess.  his name is dobie.

it was friday, i had a crappy long day at work, i was going to go directly to the liquor store and buy some beer [for myself] and do some christmas shopping while i was there.  i had to drop a package off at fedex for work before i could go to the liquor store, but it was my second stop….

since the liquor store can not sell cold beer, i had to come home and put a couple of bottles in the freezer and [you guessed it!] beer slushies again!

i know, i know, i got several suggestions on how to quickly cool beer without putting it in the freezer, but it was [not necessarily the quickest] definitely the easiest.

so, i had a couple of beers and was sitting on the couch watching ghost whisperer when my [giant] cat james jumped up and laid down …. jumped is not exactly what he did, but he did manage to get his body on to the couch and flopped down in his spot.  now james [as some of you may know] is a large cat, and being a large cat he has [some] difficulty [no way!]  in reaching his nether regions for personal hygiene.  the parts of his body he can reach are quite clean, soft and shiny, but the parts he can’t are taken care of by me using a baby wipe.  which he absolutely hates, by the way.

so, i glance at him and think [out loud] ‘you are a scum and you need a bath’.  well before i can talk my self out of it [come to my senses], i hit pause on the DVR, i put water in the tub, get an old water pitcher, some old towels and herd him into the bathroom.

this is not his first bath and he actually doesn’t mind the water, shampooing and scrubbing part. what he does hate is the drying off part, but when a 35 pound cat flops out of the bathtub soaking wet he takes a lot of water with him.  so in order not to completely flood the bathroom i have to have old towels ready to soak up the water, in no way can i try to dry him off, because [as some of you may also know] he is mean.

ok, so [check title of this post] i think ‘i should take a photo’, well this is the best i could do with one hand.

he doesn’t exactly look like this is the worst thing that has ever happened to him… although he does look a little unhappy.

it only took him about 5 hours to finally get dry and i did chase him around with a towel to soak up some of the excess.  he was pretty good about the whole situation and [allen, this one’s for you] he is now shiny and soft and smells good too!

ain’t he cute?!

it’s the weekend, as promised i am drinking wine and shortly i am going to be listening to john denver on pandora.com.

i am linking two dog stories here, one should make you smile and the other one will break your heart.  doesn’t matter which one you read first, i think i’d go with the smile, but read them both. [note. read the comments on the second one, she writes an update]

this is another dog story, one of my dog’s story.

about 18 years ago, some friends of mine found a puppy that had been shot in the head and left to die in the mud.  after hearing him cry for two days they got in their boat and went to find him.  about a week later they were going on vacation they wanted me to take him, i said no, but i agreed to watch him while they were gone.

when he got to my house he was sickly and couldn’t eat much because his jaw was broken, he had a hole in his head that went in from behind his ear and came out in his neck.  i took him to the vet to have him checked out.  he had a “hair plug” in his head that had to be removed and then i had to make sure to keep the wound clean and i was supposed to feed him regular food, because that would make his jaw stronger.

i fell in love with him immediately, i named him ‘murphy’ after the cop in robocop, because he had survived being shot. i called him ‘muffin’ because he was so sweet.  when my friends got back from vacation i couldn’t let him go, he stayed with me.  he had nerve damage in his face and his nose was a little off center, our friend doug used to call him “murphy joe buttafuco”.  he was deaf in one ear and used to run around in circles in the back yard, his good ear to the outside happy as could be.

after about three years, murphy started having seizures.  the first one scared me to death, i didn’t know what was happening.  the seizures became more frequent and finally with medication i was able to control them, for about a year.  i guess the brain damage was just too much because one night he had a seizure, went into a coma and i had to have him put to sleep.

i literally felt like i had given up and murdered my dog.  the vet was in surgery when i took murphy in for the last time and i didn’t get to talk to him.  a few days later i got a note in the mail from him he told me that murphy had been lucky to have four years with me and that someday i would see the person that shot him and i would know that it was him that shot my dog and he would know that i knew.

actually, i was the lucky one, murphy was a good dog.   i still have a photo of him in the hall and his ashes are on the shelf on the tv stand.  I’m not sure what the whole point of this is, i guess that story about ssg kim’s dogs being abandoned by the person that was supposed to take care of them pissed me off so bad i just started thinking about murphy being left for dead.

i don’t know what kind of incredible asshole would agree to take care of someone’s pets and then just lock them up, abandon them and leave them to nearly starve.  especially when this woman is out of the country serving in the military.  i do truly believe that god writes all this stuff down and that someday the person who did this will find themselves at the mercy of three dogs who will lock them up and throw away the key.

and on another note, between the wine, the music, murphy memories and being just down right pissed off, i’m boobing!  maybe my bladder is behind my eyeballs after all….

decaf kahlua anyone?

this post is from 3 days ago, but i never published it…  well, i’m too busy to write a new one right now, so here this one is….

i can’t have caffeine, it’s a medical problem.  i won’t go into the whole story here, but it involved being sick and in pain for about two years, thousands of dollars in medical bills and two trips to the hospital [one in an ambulance]. i really like kahula….  my friend dawny always makes me homemade decaf kahlua for christmas, i bring this up now because i’m cold and i’m drinking decaf coffee with decaf kahlua…  the kahlua is decaf, but it has all the alcohol, so i may start slurring my words… but my stomach won’t hurt. thank you again dawny!!!  i’m sure she would part with the recipe if anyone is interested.

my nephew, allen, moved his blog to wordpress, there is a link on my home page under “wag more, bark less”.  visit him, because i know how lonely it is on xanga, tell your friends to visit him too.

i talk to my dog, i know that’s dumb, but then i don’t sound nutzoid if my neighbors are listening to me talk to myself!  but i ask him stuff like ‘what are you doing?’ and ‘what are you barking at?” he hasn’t got a clue what that stuff means.

he does however know what these phrases are:

‘do you want some breakfast?’ [we only have one meal in this house, breakfast, so he gets this question whenever his dish is empty and he is standing with his foot in it],

‘do you want a bone’ [not a real bone, i never give my dog real bones, just chewy bones or cookie bones],

‘go get your [insert name here] “fid”, “goober”, “banana”, “blue”, “chicken” ‘ or ‘where is your [insert name here]  “fid”, “goober”, “banana”, “blue”, “chicken” ‘

‘bring’, ‘give’.

oh and ‘don’t touch my food with your face’

…my all time favorite ‘do you need to shake the weasel?’

he’s old and seems to be going deaf, but i’m almost completely convinced that he just has selective hearing loss!

unfortunately, i have about 8000 things that need to be done inside.  oh, you know, like watch football, plus monitor my two fantasy football teams [the golden graboids and wildwons] they both pretty much suck because at least half of  players both my teams seem to be injured… i just had to dump kevin curtis and find someone to replace him on both teams….

then i should be working on my living room project and various other stupid things that need to be done, i have to finish mowing the lawn because i didn’t do that yesterday because i actually just sat around all afternoon listening to football on the radio and watching a parade that went right by my house.  i did score a bag of candy and some crayons and two passes to the miniature golf course and some string cheese.  so considering how bad the aggies got beat yesterday it wasn’t a total loss, i have string cheese.

may just bag the whole project thing and sit outside and read.  this really is my favorite time of year.  it is 77* and not a cloud in the sky, and just a little while ago i saw two golden eagles fly over my house…  would have missed that if i’d been inside.

sometimes meat loaf just sounds good for dinner, like today for instance.  maybe because it’s fall, but i’m having meat loaf for dinner.  i make a small little meat loaf for one [i don’t do left overs] and i’m starving, so i think i will have an early “supper” as my grandma used to say.  sunday supper like at 3:00 pm.  which means i have to go make meat loaf right now!

then i think the dog and i will go outside.
